Frequently asked questions

What is deducted from my salary?+

Two main things: income tax (after your £12,570 personal allowance, at 20%, 40% then 45%) and National Insurance (8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, 2% above). What is left is your take-home pay.

Does this cover Scotland?+

Not exactly — Scotland sets its own income-tax bands, so a Scottish taxpayer's tax differs slightly. National Insurance and the personal allowance are the same across the UK.

Why does pay over £100,000 lose so much?+

Above £100,000 your personal allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 you earn, disappearing at £125,140. That creates an effective marginal rate of about 60% in that band.
